Overview

The Astro A40 has occupied the main stage in console esports, notably Halo and Call of Duty LANs, for an entire decade. The TR (Tournament Ready) generation maintains the classic aesthetic and core open-back signature that made the A40 famous. It is highly beloved by gamers thanks to its unique, extremely airy fit and modular design.

The A40 TR is typically sold alongside the famous MixAmp Pro TR. While this entry reflects the headset alone natively wired via 3.5mm without the MixAmp, the bare headset still offers the same core DNA that made it legendary format: wide 40mm transducers set in an airy, over-ear shell.

Key Features

The primary feature of the A40 TR is its open-back architecture out of the box. By not sealing the driver off from the room, the A40 minimizes resonance and greatly expands the soundstage, making environmental audio feel natural and untethered from your ears.

Astro also designed the A40 TR to be modular. You can hot-swap the headband cushion, speaker tags, ear cushions, and microphone to convert the open-back setup into a fully sealed closed-back configuration specifically for loud tournament environments (using the separately sold Mod Kit).

Audio Quality

Open-back designs are fundamentally different from traditional closed-back gaming headsets. The soundstage is significantly wider, allowing for phenomenal directional cues. First-person shooters sound more expansive, giving life to distant explosions, gunfire echoes, and positional shuffling.

The downside of wide-open drivers is they naturally lack sub-bass punch. The A40 TR sounds polite and flat rather than booming or cinematic. Additionally, noise isolation is effectively zero; you will hear everything in your room, and everyone will subtly hear your game audio if they are sitting near you.

Comfort & Build

Astro’s comfort is historically polarizing due to the size and clamping mechanism, but for users with medium-to-large heads, it is often lauded as the most comfortable headset ever engineered. The huge, cloth-wrapped ear cushions apply barely any clamping pressure to the sides of the head.

The heavy structural plastic combined with aluminum adjustment pipes feels slightly wobbly when not worn, but this slack is intentional—it allows the huge earcups to rest perfectly against the skull. This unique construction has survived the rigors of competitive travel backpacks and LAN desks for years.

Verdict

The Astro A40 TR remains a titan, especially for console streamers prioritizing open-back natural sound and long-session comfort. Its steep standalone price for a wired plastic headset and bare-bones microphone are notable detractions. However, its modularity, immense comfort for larger head sizes, and unique airy acoustic imaging keep it highly relevant in competitive console circles.
